Probably the most interesting news articles recently are the articles quoting Dr. Robert Patulny concerning women being happier during the day more often than men. I haven’t been able to find the article as I would like to know the methodology since it so clearly contradicts this analysis of many large national representative samples -> http://www.myhappy.com/article/2009/09/21/women-have-become-less-happy-than-men/
I’m guessing that his sample has something in common with the yourmorals sample I analyzed before here -> http://www.myhappy.com/article/2009/09/21/what-makes-women-who-visit-yourmoralsorg-more-satisfied-with-their-lives-than-men/ and that perhaps they are more liberal than average?
The New Yorker book review is interesting, but dated, in that it also ignores some of Justin Wolfers’ work showing that money does matter. Most psychologists agree that money helps, but money doesn’t help happiness very much at large sums, something which I think Wolfers’ studies are consistent with since they have to use the log() of income to get a linear relationship.
btw, here is Dr. Patulny’s website, mainly for my reference in case his publication pops up…
